Rock Climbing in Strubens Valley, Johannesburg

I spent a day rock climbing in Strubens Valley with MCSA Johannesburg. The site is on public property but you need to pay R20 to the car guard for secure parking on a stand that leads to the crags.

Getting to Strubens Valley is very easy. The site is located just behind Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort. It’s a 35 minute drive from central Johannesburg.

You can find driving directions and further information on the site here: http://www.climbing.co.za/wiki/Strubens_Valley

It’s only a 5 minute walk on a slight incline from the car park to the climbing area.

The site has a variety of climbing routes ranging from grades 5 – 27, from easy to moderate difficulty. The routes are mostly between 6 to 10 meters high and most have been bolted for sports climbing.

You’ll also have a good view of the Westrand and Clearwater Mall from this east-facing route. It’s hot in the mornings as the sun only moves behind the cliff face after mid-day.

Strubens Valley is an enjoyable climbing venue in Johannesburg. It’s a good, nearby place to practice and perfect your climbing skills.

Just remember to bring your own drinks and snacks. There are no facilities available on site. And always remember to pack out your trash.
